Vale Gareth James

The Melbourne and Olympic Parks Trust pays tribute to former CEO Gareth James, following news of his passing on 18 November 2023.

Gareth had a long career at Melbourne & Olympic Parks (M&OP), serving as CEO over two separate stints. As CEO of Olympic Park, from 1986 – 1996, he oversaw the management of the Sport and Entertainment Centre and the Glasshouse, before returning to manage the amalgamated Melbourne and Olympic Parks Trust in 1997 until his retirement in 2005.  

During his tenure, Gareth oversaw the construction of John Cain Arena (then Vodafone Arena), while his leadership helped lay the foundations for the precinct as a destination for live sport and entertainment.  

Outside of his roles at M&OP, Gareth made a significant contribution to the live events industry and was an architect and founding member of the Venue Management Association and Venue Management School.
