Rod Laver Arena Turns 30

Today marks Rod Laver Arena’s 30th birthday and kicks off a special year of celebration for the venue at Melbourne & Olympic Parks.

Officially opening on the 11th January 1988, three decades have seen the renowned venue welcome millions of patrons to be entertained and inspired by a laudable list of artists, athletes and performers.

We are excited to share a year-long celebration in honour of the arena and its legacy, the people who have made it and their memories there.

Look out for special tributes and opportunities to be involved as we mark this milestone and what has been achieved, while embarking on a new era with the venue’s world-class refurbishment leading the way.

Bringing a phenomenal calendar of events to Melbourne, Rod Laver Arena has delivered Victoria’s people and visitors with memorable moments and spectacular stories to last a lifetime.

It has been home to the spectrum of recreation and cultural opportunities of our city; as the centrepiece of the Australian Open Tennis Grand Slam, hosting international sports from basketball to motorbike super-cross, family shows such as Disney on Ice and megastar concerts.

Across this time, it has received accolades and awards no less than being named the third highest grossing concert venue in the world - behind only Madison Square Garden (New York) and O2 Arena (London) in 2009.

It further achieved Billboard’s International Top Boxscore and becoming a finalist in Pollstar’s International Venue of the year in 2013, when P!nk incredibly topped records by performing 18 shows that sold 250,000 tickets.

One of the most dynamic transformations Rod Laver Arena has seen was in March 2007 with the FINA 2007 World Swimming Championships, when a 50-metre temporary pool was built on the arena’s floor.

We look forward to sharing more of Rod Laver Arena’s story over the coming months, follow along on social media for all the latest news and information.
