Melbourne to help host Rugby League World Cup 2017

Melbourne Rectangular Stadium will host two blockbuster matches for one of Australia’s biggest sporting events next year, the Rugby League World Cup 2017 (RLWC2017).

The tournament will kick off at Melbourne Rectangular Stadium on Friday 27 October 2017 with the opening match between the Kangaroos and England. This will be followed by an exciting Quarter-Final game on 19 November. Further matches will be played at various venues across Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea.

RLWC2017 Chief Executive Officer, Michael Brown, said the Victorian Government has been a great supporter of Rugby League in recent years.

“Melbourne Rectangular Stadium is the home of Rugby League in Victoria and provides the perfect stage to showcase international Rugby League to a large global audience,” said Mr Brown.

“We want the Rugby League World Cup 2017 to be the best ever and it’s only fitting games will be played in one of the world’s greatest sporting capitals.”

More than 20 million people around the world are expected to watch the tournament which will see 14 teams play 28 games over five weeks from 27 October to 2 December 2017.
